Project
Testing of samples for reactivity with ammonium nitrate as AEISG Code of Practice “Elevated Temperature and Reactive Ground” Appendix 2: Isothermal Reactive Ground Test
Conducted For - Hanwha (HMS)
Requested By - Stuart Parsons
Report Number - GC2-8-17 (Samples 1,2,3 and ammonium nitrate control sample)
Written By - Dr G. Cavanough
Date - 6th August, 2017 (tests perform 1st -6th August)
Information Supplied
Preparation of samples procedure
1. Preparation of reagents:
1.1) 6 emulsions/6 ANFO/ 4 EPS are prepared in the box.
- Emulsion: No 1 ~ No 6.
- ANFO: No.1 ~ No.6.
- EPS: No.1,2,4,5.
1.2) Emulsion samples should be weighed.
Other samples already weighed in our lab. Only Emulsion samples perform this step.
2. Procedure
In a 100ml glass beaker, combine Emulsion, ANFO and EPS. And mix the contents with spatula.
Testing
Samples 1 to 3 were prepared as per above in addition to a sample of ammonium nitrate to confirm reactive ground sample.
The samples were tested as per the AEISG code.
Figure 1 – Samples under test
Results
All Temperature Measurements:
Figure 2 – Temperature ramp for all samples – no temperature excursions evident
Figure 3 – All temperature measurements over 2 days – reaction by ammonium nitrate control sample evident.
Figure 4 – Video of all samples under test showing all samples reacting with only the ammonium nitrate sample producing visible NOx emissions.
AN Sample
Result: Reaction – Both temperature excursions and reaction and NOx observed in video.
Figure 6 – Ammonium Nitrate sample at 55°C for 2 days – note temperate excursion due to reaction.
Sample 1
Non-Reactive with some non-heat producing reactions occurring
Recommend retest for a duration of 4 times the product sleep time specification as per the AEISG code.
